Domestic Short Hair, Deaf
One day Wendy's employer came to
her and asked if she wanted to adopt a 6 month old cat.
She wasn't sure what Noel would think about it so she went home
and asked. "What's wrong with him?" he wanted to know. All
she could offer was all she knew, was this was supposedly
a really nice short haired white cat with 2 different colored
eyes and he needed a home. Noel said "OK" and they adopted
him.
It wasn't long before they
noticed something was a little different about Casper. They
noticed he could sleep through any volume of noise and only
responded to vibration. They did some research and found
out that all white cats with blue eyes are deaf. Casper
had one blue eye and one green eye. They found out that
many times cats with 2 different colored eyes may be only half
deaf, hearing out of the non-blue-eyed side, but their hopes
were dashed. Casper is profoundly deaf.
They also came to realize
another very interesting difference with this cat. He has
a voice and knows how to use it! When he gets stuck outside, he
howls at the front door. When he is hungry, he will push
his food dish off the feeding shelf with a loud CLANG when it
hits the floor. He can't hear it but he knows we do.
When he comes in sometimes he howls just to see who will come
find him!
He is very friendly but still a
little spooky around strangers. He hangs out in the barn with
Fiona. He also catches his share of mice. Apparently
you don't have to have ears to catch a mouse! Or a bird,
or a rabbit! Casper is a hunter extraordinaire! Most
recently, Casper came in and with his usual flare, pushed his
food bowl off the platform. However, it wasn't time to
feed the cats. But Casper disagreed. Within the next
half an hour, Casper showed back up in the kitchen howling
loudly. When Wendy went to see what was up, Casper laid
the little dead bird at her feet, then jumped up onto his
platform and asked to be fed AGAIN. That was the first
time he ever pulled that trick! And no, he still didn't
get fed! Silly cat. What was he thinking?
